Happy almost Bosses Day!

Happy almost Bosses Day!

There are many kinds of bosses in this world. But you only remember 3: the good, the bad, and the ones you try to forget. I’ve had a few bosses in my career, and I’m happy to say they’ve mostly fallen in the first category! What they all have in common, though, is that I learned something from each of them.

Right now, I’m blessed to have a truly inspirational boss. He was the 1 who convinced me to leave an established, secure job to join a little insurance upstart that he said would rock the local industry. Nearly 10 years later, and just look at us, @Gideon Galloway.

So, ahead of Bosses Day on 16 October, here are the top 10 lessons I’ve learned from my bosses over the years.

Always fight business with business... This is such a typically Gideon and King Price lesson. You can disagree with him any time you like, but make sure you’ve brought facts and figures to the table.

You can do anything that you apply your mind and time to... Don’t let your boss, or anyone else, put you in a box. Dream big, plan big, and then break it down into smaller, more manageable chunks. Don't be ruled by your own personal fear.

You can have fun even while working hard... In fact, you should have some fun while working! You spend a huge chunk of your waking life working, so it may as well make you laugh.

Don’t get involved in office gossip... If a colleague tries to talk to you about someone else, they’re probably talking about you behind your back too. Don’t be that person. Don’t talk *about* people, talk *to* them.

Rather try and fail, than not try at all... Again, a big King Price lesson. As a boss, you must give your people the opportunity to experiment and take some risks. After all, magic never happens in the comfort zone. (Just don’t repeat your mistakes!)

Change is a good thing... When I joined King Price, I was petrified. What if it didn’t work out? Why was I changing something that was working well? Today, I work in a business that changes by the day – and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

All things can be achieved, 1 step at a time... King Price has a habit of springing surprises on us. But instead of throwing our hands in the air, we put them to work. You’d be surprised what you can achieve.

Don’t reply to emails when you’re emotional... Major life lesson right here. If you’ve dashed off an email while you’re feeling angry, hurt, or emotional, leave it in your draft folder and walk away. Chances are you’ll come back with far more perspective. And you’ll avoid a lot of unnecessary drama!

Build your connections with people in the good and the bad times... Well, we’ve certainly had our share of tough times in the past couple of years. The way we got through it? By leaning on the bonds we built in the good times to support and nurture each other through the bad.

I don’t want to be a seagull... You know the type. Flies in. Makes a noise. Poops on everything. Flies out, leaving even more chaos than before. Rather be a penguin. Waddle in. High flipper everyone. Stand together against the cold.

To all the bosses out there, happy Bosses Day! Keep being brilliant!

Well said Natalie, and as a leader you are often the topic of the dinner-time conversation; the trick is to have more people chatting about you in a positive way, more of the time.
