Gavin Alexander Appointed by Gov. Healey to Judicial Nominating Commission

BOSTON, MA (May 2, 2023) Nationwide employment law firm Jackson Lewis P.C. is pleased to announce Wellness Director Gavin Alexander has been appointed by Governor Maura T. Healey to the Judicial Nominating Commission (JNC), a panel responsible for advising the Governor on nominating and appointing judicial officers.

“Judicial officers play a critical role in shaping the lives of Massachusetts residents. Our goal is to ensure that those serving on our courts are committed to justice and equality, and that they are representative of the vibrant, diverse communities they serve,” said Governor Healey. “We’re proud to be appointing this experienced, dedicated group to the Judicial Nominating Commission, who I know I can count on to advise me on nominating the best judges to serve the people of Massachusetts.”

The JNC is tasked with ensuring that judicial candidates hold the qualities necessary to serve on the state’s courts, including integrity, a strong work ethic, clear judgment, and a commitment to equality and impartiality. Commissioners are also instructed to work to ensure that judicial candidates represent the diversity of the communities they serve, including geography, race, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability and economic status.

“It is an honor to be selected by Governor Healey to serve on the Judicial Nominating Commission,” said Gavin. “As a longtime advocate for diversity, equity and inclusion and well-being in the legal profession, I am thrilled to have the opportunity to assist the Governor in appointing an amazing set of judges and judicial officers who represent the broad spectrum of lived experiences and identities that make up the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.”

Gavin is an experienced and passionate advocate for diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI) and well-being in the legal profession and beyond. After graduating from Harvard Law School magna cum laude in 2012, he clerked for Justice Ralph D. Gants of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court (SJC), and subsequently practiced as an associate in the corporate department of a global law firm from 2013-2020.  Before joining Jackson Lewis, Gavin served as the first-ever Fellow of the SJC Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being, and he remains an active member of that Committee. He also serves on the Boston Bar Association’s Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Section Steering Committee, the American Bar Association Commission on Lawyer Assistance Programs’ DEI Committee, and the Institute for Well-Being in Law’s DEI Committee.

Gavin has served as a co-chair of the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association and as a member of the Board of Directors of the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association. He was named one of the Best LGBT Attorneys Under 40 by the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association in 2017, selected as one of Massachusetts Lawyers Weekly’s 25 “Up & Coming Lawyers” for 2019, featured on the Massachusetts Super Lawyers “Rising Stars” list for 2018-2020, and named a Fellow of the American Bar Foundation in 2020. In 2021, he received the Massachusetts Association of Hispanic Attorneys’ Leadership Award, and in 2022, he received the Kevin Larkin Memorial Award for Public Service from the Massachusetts LGBTQ Bar Association.
