On September 22, 2002, Governor Gray Davis signed into law Assembly Bill 1401 (Thomson) which requires all insured health plans (and those whose benefits are provided by HMOs) in California to permit individuals who have exhausted their 18-month or 29-month coverage period under COBRA or Cal-COBRA to extend their continuation coverage up to 36 months.

The California Legislature recently passed a new law, Assembly Bill No. 1401, which extends the maximum period of COBRA coverage under insured healthcare plans to 36 months for qualifying events occurring on or after January 1, 2003.
