A.B. 2208, the “California Insurance Equality Act,” provides additional benefits to the registered domestic partners of employees in California and imposes additional benefit requirements on insurance companies. The law requires all health care service plans and health insurance policies, as well as all other insurance policies regulated by the California Department of Insurance, to provide benefits to registered domestic partners of employees equal to the benefits that are offered to spouses of employees.

California 's expanded domestic partnership law, Assembly Bill 205, goes into effect January 1, 2005. Known as the "California Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act" (DPRRA), this new law grants registered domestic partners the same rights, benefits, duties and responsibilities that spouses have under California law.

On September 19, 2003, California Governor Gray Davis signed into law the Domestic Partner Rights and Responsibilities Act of 2003 (AB 205), granting to registered domestic partners virtually all of the same rights and responsibilities afforded to married spouses.
