Farm Workers Union Challenges New North Carolina Law

This summer, the NC Legislature passed the North Carolina Farm Act of 2017 (“Farm Act”). The law amended an existing statute by countering indirect unionization tactics and protecting farmers against having to collect union dues. This week, the Farm Labor Organizing Committee (“FLOC”), a union, filed a lawsuit in federal court in North Carolina challenging the Farm Act.

Medical Marijuana Comes to North Dakota: What North Dakota Employers Need to Know

When North Dakota’s Compassionate Care Act went into effect on December 8, 2016, North Dakota joined a proliferation of 28 states across the country that have legalized some form of medical marijuana use. Codified at North Dakota Century Code Section 19-24-01, North Dakota’s new law limits medical use of marijuana to individuals with certain “debilitating medical conditions,” including, but not limited to, cancer, human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and epilepsy.

North Dakota Broadens PTO Forfeiture Provision

An amendment to North Dakota's termination pay law makes it easier for private employers in the state to avoid paying out unused paid time off (PTO) to a terminating employee. Employers should review and update, if necessary, their PTO and final pay policies in light of this change in the law before it goes into effect, and notify employees of any changes as well.
