If it is offensive then it should be covered anyway, no one should be showing anything offensive, it is totally unprofessional to be showing anything that could offend anyone. There is a huge difference between an offensive tattoo and a piercing, how can a piercing be offensive? It is not to everyone’s taste but it could not be offensive in the way a racist tattoo could be (for example). I have nothing against tattoos, I love them myself and have several, but even I can see the wisdom in keeping them covered at work.
