Lawyer Profile
John B. Golper is a senior partner of Ballard, Rosenberg, Golper, & Savitt, and exclusively practices Labor and Employment Law and Related Litigation on behalf of Management. Since 1986, Mr. Golper has held a personal "A-V" rating from Martindale-Hubbell, which is the highest rating an individual can receive from this nationally-recognized legal directory. He received his BA (with Honors) from Indiana University in 1972 and his law degree from UCLA in 1975. Mr. Golper's practice has been devoted exclusively to the representation of management in labor and employment law matters. Mr. Golper is an experienced trial attorney. His areas of concentration involve litigation of wrongful discharge, employment discrimination and other employment-related disputes in both federal and state courts. His activities also include collective bargaining, arbitration and representation of management before all administrative agencies. In addition, he is experienced in mediation and other forms of ADR. Mr. Golper is a member of the California Bar and is admitted to practice in all of California's federal and state courts, the United States Court of Appeals for the Third and Ninth Circuits, and the United States Supreme Court.

During his 30+ years as a lawyer, Mr. Golper has successfully litigated to a defense judgment hundreds of employment cases for employers in the federal and state courts. His experience includes trying numerous matters to successful conclusions in jury trials. In recent years, he has developed considerable experience in being brought in to defend high exposure discrimination cases where jury consultants have predicted seven and eight figure verdicts against the employer. He has been the lead defense counsel in a number of judicial decisions creating favorable law for employers. Significant appellate victories in which Mr. Golper has created favorable law for employers include Turner v. Anheuser-Busch, 7 Cal.4th 1238 (1994) [creating favorable law regarding constructive discharge] and Davis v. Consolidated Freightways, 29 Cal.App.4th 354 (1994) [creating favorable law regarding issues of at-will employment, post-employment employee republication of defamatory statements, and restrictions on employee polygraph examinations.]

Mr. Golper lectures to management groups and continuing legal education symposia and has authored numerous articles in the labor and employment law field. He has been invited to speak at a number of "Best Practices" symposia. Most recently, in April 2002, PIHRA published a book entitled "Sample Personnel Policies" in which several sections were authored by Mr. Golper. Among his publications are four papers he authored which were published by the Employee Relations Law Journal as part of a series entitled "Termination Law Briefing: A Checklist Approach." Mr. Golper is recognized as a national authority on the subject of gender-based wage discrimination and comparable worth. His article entitled "The Current Legal Status of `Comparable Worth' in the Federal Courts," published at 34 CCH Labor Law Journal 563 (Sept. 1983), is still considered a primer on the subject. In 1986, Mr. Golper completed two years of service as Governor Deukmejian's appointee to the California Comparable Worth Task Force by co-authoring a Minority Report to the California Legislature recommending against adoption of comparable worth legislation.

Mr. Golper is a member of the Labor and Employment Law and Litigation Sections of the American, California and Los Angeles County Bar Associations. He also is a member of the Defense Research and Trial Lawyers Association, Southern California Defense Counsel, The Association of Business Trial Lawyers and the Federal Bar Association. He belongs to several human resources associations, including PIHRA and IRRA. He is also the subject of biographical listings in Who's Who In America, Who's Who in California, The Best Lawyers In America and Southern California Super Lawyers. In April 2002, Mr. Golper was recognized in a special edition of The San Fernando Business Journal as one of "The Top 25 Attorneys Of The San Fernando Valley". In January 2000, Mr. Golper was featured in a cover story profile in the Los Angeles Daily Journal Verdicts & Settlements magazine. He was also profiled in the May, 1999 edition of Verdicts & Settlements.

Mr. Golper's clients include several national and international companies for which he has been designated as either the lead or one of the lead employment litigation counsel for their California operations. His list of clients has also included the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing, which he was retained to represent in the early 90's when a District Administrator brought a claim alleging race and gender discrimination.
