Bob Johnson is a shareholder with Buchanan Ingersoll, a member of the firm's Tax Section, the Employee Benefits Practice Group, the Executive Compensation Practice Group and the Tax-Exempt Organizations Practice Group.

Bob has practiced in the employee benefits and executive compensation area since 1971. He also regularly advises tax-exempt nonprofit organizations on a wide variety of issues (including, among others, organization, corporate transactions, obtaining and maintaining federal tax-exempt status, subsidiary and affiliated entities, unrelated business income, lobbying restrictions, intermediate sanctions and excess benefit transactions, and special issues regarding compensation and employee benefits for nonprofits).

Bob’s employee benefits practice focuses upon the more sophisticated benefit and executive compensation problems faced by large and medium-sized businesses as well as nonprofit institutions. These include pension plans, "Rabbi" trusts, 401(k) plans, 403 (b) plans, 457 plans, nonqualified deferred compensation, employee stock ownership plans ("ESOPs"), executive employment and change-of-control agreements, welfare plans, ERISA and related tax problems. In addition, he has experience in dealing with employee benefit plan issues in business acquisitions, divestitures and major financing transactions.

Bob has been active for many years in writing for and speaking to professional groups on pension, employee benefits and executive compensation law, including special problems faced by tax-exempt organizations. He has been a frequent lecturer/author in employee benefits and executive compensation law seminars sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Institute. Bob has also published several articles and authored a chapter for Executive Compensation (BNA Books, 2002).

Bob is listed in Who's Who in America and Who's Who in American Law. He has been listed regularly in The Best Lawyers in America since the 1989 edition.

In 2004 and 2005, Bob was selected by his peers as one of Pennsylvania's Super Lawyers®, among the top 5 percent of attorneys practicing in Pennsylvania. He has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Tax Counsel and a Fellow of the American College of Employee Benefits Counsel. Active in several professional organizations, Bob has provided pro bono counsel to Christian Associates of Southwest Pennsylvania, the River City Brass Band, the River City Brass Band Charitable Endowment, Early Music America, Chatham Baroque, Renaissance and Baroque Society of Pittsburgh and the CTC Foundation.
