Lawyer Profile Practicing in all areas of employment and labor relations law, Michael Starr represents management in court and before administrative agencies, as well as in arbitration, mediation, and collective bargaining. Michael also advises clients on preventive labor and employee relations practices and is nationally-recognized in sexual harassment, employment discrimination, and international employment law, having written and lectured widely in these areas. His practice also includes the litigation of restrictive covenants in employment, employee theft of trade secrets, and employee disloyalty matters. Michael's experience encompasses litigation in state and federal courts, including in the U.S. courts of appeals and the U.S. Supreme Court, and, in addition to defending employers in employment discrimination, breach of contract and other matters, involves obtaining injunctions against ongoing misconduct and the defense of employers in class action lawsuits, alleged employment discriminations, or wage-law violations. Michael's clients are engaged in a broad range of industries. He has represented companies engaged in financial services, communications, media, publishing, and management consulting, as well as in retail, manufacturing, and construction. Before entering private practice, Michael served as law clerk to The Honorable Abner J. Mikva, Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C. Michael is frequently published on employment issues and is the regular employment law columnist for The National Law Journal, and was an editor of the Yale Law Journal.Michael's extensive additional activities include being a founding board member and member of the Board of Directors of the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA), a member and part of the Board of Arbitrators with the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), a Mediator for the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York, and sitting on the Human Resources Committee for the New York City Partnership and Chamber of Commerce. Representative Experience Ongoing advice and litigation in both employment and labor-relations matters for Fox Television Stations, HarperCollins Publishers, and other companies affiliated with News America Incorporated. Representing a global hotel-and-resort company in arbitrations involving employment disputes with its most senior corporate executives. Obtaining judgment against a company that wrongfully recruited the senior employees of an international management consulting firm to launch a "copy-cat" version of that firm's distinctive corporate finance consulting practice. Obtained a court-ordered injunction against the New York Newspaper Pressmen's Union to halt surreptitious workplace disruptions that interfered with the timely printing and distribution of the New York Post.
