Janine Hancock Jones practices in the area of employment and labor law. Ms. Jones focuses her practice on representing management clients in all employee relations and human resources matters, including employment litigation, traditional labor and federal/state civil rights litigation. She has defended employers against claims of discrimination (including sex, race, age, FMLA and disability retaliation, sexual and racial harassment and breach of contract.

Ms. Jones has assisted clients in defending claims before the Ohio Civil Rights Commission, the Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation and the Unemployment Compensation Review Commission. Ms. Jones also provides general employment and business counsel to her clients.

Some of Ms. Jones's recent experience includes:

  • Obtained summary judgment in race discrimination case (Jackson v. State Farm)

  • Obtained summary judgment in age discrimination and FMLA case (Yates v. United States Enrichment Corp.)

  • Obtained dismissal in 42 U.S.C. § 1983 action (Daniels v. University of Rio Grande)

  • Obtained early dismissal of claims of violation of Ohio public policy and breach of contract, harassment and hostile work environment, covenant of good faith and fair dealing, intentional infliction of emotional distress, promissory estoppel and violation of Section 301 of the Labor Management Relations Act (Fossett v. Ford)

  • Obtained summary judgment in disability discrimination and retaliation case (Thomas v. Avon)

    Ms. Jones is the author of "Burlington Northern of Sante Fe Railway v. White: The New Standard for Employee Retailiation Claims," published in the Columbus Bar Lawyers Quarterly, winter 2007; “Brown at 50: Why Is It Important to Celebrate?” published in the Columbus Bar Briefs, Spring 2004 and “Brown v. Board of Education at 50: Where Are We Now?” published in The Negro Educational Review, January 2005.

    She currently serves as the President of the John Mercer Langston Bar Association. She is a member of the American, National, Ohio State, Columbus and John Mercer Langston Bar Associations. Ms. Jones also serves on the Columbus Bar Association's Law 2010 and Minorities in the Law committees. She is a graduate of the Leadership of Columbus Class of 2007. In 2005, 2006 and 2007, Ms. Jones was named an Ohio “Rising Star” by Law & Politics, an honor bestowed upon only 2% of Ohio lawyers.

    Ms. Jones serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors for the Columbus Early Learning Centers, which operates a child development program providing care for children (ages 2 to 9) 24 hours a day, and Turning Point—a 24-hour crisis respite center that provides short-term care for children of parents who are dealing with an emergency crisis and cannot handle the care of their children.
