Lawyer Profile
Mr. Smith has practiced for more than thirty years representing management in all facets of labor relations, employment, occupational safety and health, and affirmative action counseling, and in defense of employment law claims. He represents a wide variety of large and small companies in the steel, food processing, public utility, telecommunications and construction industries and also serves as principal labor counsel in collective bargaining negotiations for companies in basic manufacturing and regulated industries.

He has served on the faculties of the New York State School of Industrial & Labor Relations at Cornell University and Northwestern University Law and Business Schools. He has authored five editions of Employment Discrimination Law, Cases & Materials, a casebook for law school instruction, Construction Labor Relations, a reference work widely used by construction managers and labor lawyers, as well as many other labor-related books and articles. He is currently a Chapter Editor of the ABA's Developing Labor Law treatise, a Fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers, and is listed in The Best Lawyers in America.   Mr. Smith has also been selected as an Illinois Super Lawyer.

Since 1986, the Illinois Supreme Court has appointed Mr. Smith to successive annual terms as a member and chair of one of its Hearing Boards which hears contested cases and makes recommendations for the discipline of lawyers charged with misconduct by the Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Commission of the Supreme Court of Illinois.
