Christopher W. Deering(Shareholder)Birmingham Employment Lawyer Lawyer Profile Mr. Deering practices exclusively in the area of labor and employment law. He has considerable experience representing employers in employment-related litigation on federal, state and local levels before courts and administrative agencies regarding claims concerning discrimination, harassment, wrongful discharge, wage and hour violations (including collective actions), enforceability of arbitration agreements in the employment context, and covenants not to compete. Mr. Deering has litigated such matters in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Texas. In addition, Mr. Deering regularly provides counseling to employers on matters of employee discipline and termination, enforcement and implementation of employment policies, workplace investigations and reductions in force. He has written extensively on issues in the labor and employment law field, and is a regular contributing editor of Employment Discrimination Law, The Developing Labor Law, The Fair Labor Standards Act, and The Family & Medical Leave Act (BNA Books), the seminal treatises devoted to labor and employment law issues. He is currently serving a two-year appointment as a Fellow to the Labor and Employment Law Section of the American Bar Association. Mr. Deering conducts personnel audits and provides training on a variety of issues, such as wage and hour law compliance, litigation avoidance strategies, administering employee discipline, conducting performance appraisals, workplace privacy and sexual harassment. During law school, Mr. Deering served as Editor-in-Chief of the Cumberland Law Review, a member of the Moot Court Board, and a Cordell Hull Fellow. He is also a member of Curia Honoris, Phi Delta Phi, and Omicron Delta Kappa, and is a charter member of the Birmingham Inn of the American Inns of Court. Upon graduation from law school, he served as law clerk to the Honorable Edwin L. Nelson, United States District Judge for the Northern District of Alabama and then practiced labor and employment law for six years with a Birmingham, Alabama firm before joining Ogletree Deakins in 2005.
